Vaunda Micheaux Nelson | Radiant | Children's Author Book Signing Event In-Person
Vaunda Micheaux Nelson will discuss and sign her latest gift to readers young and old, entitled, “Radiant” (Penguin Random House, 2025), a middle-grade work of historical fiction in verse and set in the Pittsburgh of the author’s childhood. Parents will love this work that celebrates family and coming of age in the 1960s. For many, it will be a delightful trip down memory lane.
Vaunda Micheaux Nelson has been a beloved children’s librarian, and has served on the Newbery, Caldecott and Ezra Jack Keats awards committees. She was named the New Mexico Centennial Children’s Author in 2012 and a New Mexico Woman Who Changed America in 2005. She was awarded the Talking Leaves Oracle Award from the National Storytelling Network in 2019. Vaunda speaks with audiences nationwide.
Her many awards and distinctions include: the 2025 Jane Addams Children’s Book Honor, the Chicago Public Library’s Best of the Best of Fiction for Younger Readers, the 2025 Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection Award, the 2020 Western Writers of America Spur Award, a 2020 Will Rogers Medallion Award, the 2012 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for fiction, a 2013 Coretta Scott King Author Honor with a first at the same year’s School Library Journal Battle of the Kids’ Books, the 2012 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards “Best of Show,” the 2010 Coretta Scott King Author Award, a Simon Wiesenthal Once Upon a World Children’s Book Award, a Carter G. Woodson Honor, an Anne Izard Storyteller’s Choice Award, a Washington Post Best Book of the Year, the Book of 2016 by National Public Radio Award, and others.
